An Electronic Idea!

Hello everyone,

I had an idea today, and it worked awesomely! Our family was headed out the door to go somewhere, and I needed to do some school on the go. I didn't want to bring my humongous and heavy science book or my bulky Latin books, so I got an idea. I took pictures of the pages I needed to study and of the exercises I needed to complete and voila! My school stored on my handy IPad, instead of a heavy backpack. I just zoom in on the pic if I need to see closer.

The result-

If you tried this out, let me know how it worked for you.

Challenge B Quote From Little Britches

Ralph Moody
“A man's character is like his house. If he tears boards off his house and burns them to keep himself warm and comfortable, his house soon becomes a ruin. If he tells lies to be able to do the things he shouldn't do but wants to, his character will soon become a ruin. A man with a ruined character is a shame on the face of the earth.”

Challenge Controversey-Bowditch or Bowditch?

In Challenge A we have to read Carry On, Mr. Bowditch. An amazing book about a young boy, who was uncommonly great at math and also took every opportunity to learn. His name is Nathaniel Bowditch, but there has been disagreement on how to pronounce his last name.

Is it pronounced like Bow-(as in bow and arrow) ditch?

Or B-ow (as in ow! I hurt my toe!) ditch?

This website gives the answer to this Challenge pronunciation controversy.

Do you have any other words you don't know how to pronounce? Comment below with the word and I'll write a post on how you pronounce it!

How to Remove Distractions and Get the Most Out of Your Study Time

Colossians 3:23-24 ESV / 203 helpful votes

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.

Have you ever been trying to intently studying your school work, then suddenly fall into a day dream? Subconsciously staring out the window, fiddling with items on your desk, thinking about something way off topic, or even worse; wasting away your precious study time on the Internet. I have been there myself, multiple times. I know, at my house at least, there are more than several distractions, which waver my focus. It's important as homeschoolers, to remove distractions of our home while working, so we don't find ourselves wasting away our day, and not finishing what was expected to be completed. Here are some steps I hope are helpful to everyone.

1. Find a quiet place to work.

I have five siblings total. There is constant noise in my house, whether it be the baby screaming in the bedroom, Curious George playing in the living room, or my sister and mother discussing something which may be interesting to me in the kitchen, there are noise distractions everywhere. To get away from these, I suggest getting into a room separate from the TV, all other noisy things (and people (-: ) and shutting the door (with your parents permission, of course.) If this still doesn't work, I have heard earplugs work nicely.

2. Clear and Organize Your Workspace

A cluttered and disorganized workspace is not only distracting, but also extremely hindering to the productiveness of your work. To make your desk clutter and distraction-free, keep only have what is helpful to your studying on the desk. Picture frames, piggy-banks, magazines, and picturesque calendars may make your desk look more homely, but these can steal your attention.

3. Turn Off Electronics

Put your phone on silent and if you don't need it for studying, disable your Internet. Hand your iPod, DS, and video games over to your accountable parent, until your next free-time. This may hurt, but a rule in my house, is no electronics until the work is done. This rule is extremely helpful when trying to remove electronic distractions, during school days.

4. Close the Curtain

Although natural light can be refreshing, an open window can be a gateway to distraction. Any movement could get your attention, a car passing by, a beautiful bird landing in your yard, a lady walking a dog, or your siblings playing outside. To remove these potential focus-killers, just close the curtain.

5. Take Breaks

If you work 5 hours straight, of course you are going to have problems focusing! Every once in awhile, take a 5 to 10 minute break. Get a glass of water, go outside, pray and read your Bible, ask your mom if you could do a chore for her, or play a quick game of tag with your younger siblings.

6. Get Good Sleep, Eat Right, and Get Dressed in the Morning

Many things can hinder focus, if we stay up too late, eat junk food, and stay in our pajamas all day (what homeschooler hasn't done this before?) We aren't going to get as much done as we would have if we went to bed early, ate a healthy breakfast, dressed in regular clothes, and started our school early.

7. Pray Before Starting

Last but not least, I recommend praying before you start studying. Pray that God will give you focus, to learn what He wants you to learn, to make the most of the day He has given you, and bring glory to Him. God answers prayers.

I hope this article will be helpful to you, in the everyday process of homeschooling. I pray that it will help to make your days free of distractions from your work, and that it will aid you in making the most of the time God has given you.

Happy Studying!

Hannah

How Attitude Affects Grades

How attitude affects grades-

This shows me that even though I might not like a subject, I still need to have a good attitude about it.

Inspiring Sermon

Discovery Bible Fellowship has been doing a series in James for the past few weeks, and the series has been great. Our pastor (Dirk Madden) has spoken to us about the big picture in life, living out our faith, the identity we have in Christ, and faith that is alive. This week the topic was controlling our tongue, and how powerful words are. Mr. Madden explains it well. This sermon for some reason stood out to me. It's really great and worth watching.

(To those who have watched it, I encourage you to take the challenge he mentions, this week. I've done it for only 3 days and have already noticed how bad I was when it came to controlling my tongue.)

It's (almost) Time!

<< Ecclesiastes 3 >>
New International Version

A Time for Everything
1There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

It's only one week away!! Homeschool season is back. Hasn't summer gone by fast? And now with only a week left, it's time to prepare. The following is a list of 6 things to do before summer ends.
1. Get Back On Your Sleep Schedule
No sleeping in when school starts! Start to go to bed and wake up at set times, put yourself on a regular schedule. That way, when school starts you'll feel energized and well rested, instead of grumpy and tired.
2. Look Through Materials
Once you have your books and guides, look through them to get comfortable with the information. Look at the overview of the year to see what you are learning. See if there are any assignments the guide asks you to do before the first seminar, and do them.
3. Buy or Make a Planner
Once you are familiar with the material, get or make a schedule, which you can organize when you will do each subject. This takes a lot of pressure off your first week. If you have a planner, then you will not have to worry about what you will do when, on your first day. I recommend getting a schedule where you can change the content when needed, because if your schedule doesn't work out one week, it will be easy to change. If you do make your own planner, it's easy to customize it to how you like it. For example, I'm making my schedule to incorporate class notes, my schedule, a to-do list, and a Bible verse/devotional all in one.
4. Fill Out Papers
Specifically, the Etiquette Agreement, Risk Waiver, and Student Information sheet. All of which can be found in the guide.
5. Buy School Supplies and Organize Your Backpack
Make a list of what you need, look for good deals, and buy the things. (Of course this part comes naturally to mothers, I don't see a need to even put it on the list. :-D) Once all materials are collected put it all in your backpack, making sure to include everything on the list of necessary materials (found in the guide)
6. Have One Last Fun Time!
Do one last fun thing, while you still have the chance. Go swimming, have a back-to-school party, have a BBQ, go to the lake, go to Natural Falls State Park!  Link- http://www.travelok.com/listings/view.profile/id.5293 (I went here this summer, just for a day, and it was GREAT. It had a 70 foot waterfall and hiking trails, even a place to swim in crystal clear water. So much fun!) The choices are endless, and doing something fun and relaxing can help relieve any pre-school stress.
I hope this will help you prepare for the changing of seasons.
See you all soon,
Hannah

Ben Carson and his Speech at a Prayer Meeting

I recently came across this, and it reminded me so much of current events. Ben Carson is a renowned surgeon who worked his way up from poverty, through hard work. You can find out more about him through reading, or you could watch the movie Gifted Hands which is based on his life and work. It is very good and I would suggest watching it. To watch his speech with President Obama listening click the link below-

www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFb6NU1giRA

He addressed many of the issues we did in current events in Challenge B, along with parables and scripture. It is very good, if you haven't seen it yet please watch!

A Great Scheduling App to Keep Your Week Organized!

I was recently looking for a free schedule app that I can keep on my Ipod for keeping my school organized this semester. I tried out a few and liked the systems they used to organize. I like this method better than a paper schedule, because it's more portable and I don't have to handwrite anything.

ClassManager

I liked this one because you can choose what color your classes appear as on the schedule, you can add assignments in (along with when they are due) and they organize the classes and assignments in many different ways. For example-

- Status, which ones you have completed, which ones you haven't

- Class, which assignments are in the class

- Priority

- Summary, this is my favorite part of the schedule, because they show what is past due (that you haven't completed) also the classes going on right now, and the classes and assignments coming up.

This app is also compatible for older versions of the Ipod/Iphone so if you don't have a newer version you can still get it. (and, it's completely free, no "Do you want to buy the full version?" or anything like that)

Here's the link-
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/classmanager/id529458056?mt=8

This was my favorite scheduling app, but there are many out there, pick one to suit you!

(If you search "student planner" in the search
box at the apple store, a ton will pop up. Not all of them are free, but some are)

3 Fun Ways to Review Memory Work (Latin, Catechism, etc.)

With our winter break coming up, and with the things we have to memorize every week, I know I'm getting rusty on some things. (like Latin...) But, I know that everyone wants to have fun on their break, so here are 3 ways to have fun and still freshen up on memory work!

#1 Make a skit!

Gather your family together, along with your textbooks and flash cards, and play out some of the things you have to memorize. If its Latin, have your mom say the word in Latin and you act out the English translation, and let your family try to guess what it is. (It would be really funny if you think you know what the word is, but it was really something either than what you thought, and you were acting out the wrong word!) And if its catechism questions, or a chapter in Defeating Darwinism, you could make a skit with a sibling, (or by yourself) to explain a concept to your family. Or, if you want to practice Logic or Geography, grab your dry-erase boards, have a parent ask you what a truth table is or where Thailand is and draw out an explanation.

#2 Karaoke.

I know what your thinking, karaoke and memory work? At the same time? Sounds like a recipe for disaster. But, a song is a great way to memorize something. Pick some vocab from any subject, pick a tune, and write your own lyrics. Then get some family (or friends) together and have a performance! (If any of you have siblings in foundations, have them sing their songs from the foundations program) If you come up with an amazing song, feel free to share it, you can leave a comment below with the lyrics, tune that it goes to, or leave a link to a video of someone singing it!

#3 A 3D board game

Find a large space (like the living room or outside on the sidewalk) and set up a 3D board game, in which you are the characters or pawns. Lay out flash cards on the floor as spaces, and designate a start and an end. Grab some dice and roll, whatever number you land on is how many you move, but you can't move forward until you translate the flash card. So if you roll a five you have to move one step, translate, move a step, translate, and so on. You can play with your siblings and the first one to the end wins.

Hope these help you still have fun on your break,

Till next time

Education Quote

A funny education quote I came across today.

“I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.”
Groucho Marx
