Challenge Controversey-Bowditch or Bowditch?

In Challenge A we have to read Carry On, Mr. Bowditch. An amazing book about a young boy, who was uncommonly great at math and also took every opportunity to learn. His name is Nathaniel Bowditch, but there has been disagreement on how to pronounce his last name.

Is it pronounced like Bow-(as in bow and arrow) ditch?

Or B-ow (as in ow! I hurt my toe!) ditch?
