Logic, Geo Term, Latin Vocab, etc. Game

Hello Everyone,

Here is a fun way to study Logic, Geo Terms exc.

Make a Board Game. You can play this game with your family members and study at the same time!

Materials-

Cardboard Box
Paper or Cardstock
Scissors
Markers
Pennies

Step 1. Cut your cardboard box down the middle, so you have a long strip of cardboard.

Step 2. Cut off both of the sides so you are left with just the middle peice.

It should look like this afterward.

Step 3. Cut off the top flaps. Now you are left with a foldable peice of cardboard for your board game.

Here it is folded.

You can straighten crooked edges with scissors.

Step 4. Make a place on your board to draw the path on. Take your cardstock and arrange it on your board like this.

Next cut the cardstock to fit.

And glue it to the board, with glue

Step 5. After the glue dries, draw the path for the game. You can make it windy or straight or how ever you want. I made mine in a spiral.
Don't forget a start and end places!
And leave a spot for cards.

Step 6. Make squares and color your path.

You can decorate it with colors, or number each square.
Here's mine partly colored.

 Mine all the way colored.

You can also add special squares which say "Move another 2 spaces if you land on this" or "Sorry move back 5 spaces"

Step 7. Make the cards.
On your paper (or cardstock) make a large grid, big enough for each square to be a card, then stack two or three peices  of paper and cut along the grid, you should be left with a stack of cards to put in the spot beside your path.

On your cards put definitions, whether it be logic terms or geo terms, or even,if you have little brothers or sisters in foundations, history sentence questions. You can write the answer in tiny handwriting upside-down on the bottom. Then in a little box toward the bottom write how many spaces to move if you answer the question correctly.

You can also fold over the bottom edge so you don't see the answer on the bottom.
You can decorate the back with markers or write the subject of which the card is referring to. If you are in Challenge B you can draw from the Logic pile, if you have a sibling in Challenge A, he/she can draw from the Geo Term Pile, and if you have siblings in Foundations, they can draw from the history sentence pile, that way everyone in your family can play.

Step 8. Make the pawns.

You need something to move around the board don't you? I made them out of pennies, but you could use other things also. Take your pennies and use them as a guideline to cut out a piece of circular paper to glue on top of the penny. Once you have your peices of paper, put glue on one side of the penny and set the paper on top of the glue.
Press together and allow to dry.

Once dry you can color them different colors for different players.

Once that's done you are ready to play!

After you are done playing, you can put it all in a ziplock, fold the cardboard, and put it away.

You can also decorate the back, with the name of the game, but we did nothing fancy.

 Have Fun!

Mystery Game

Hello again,

I saw this idea on a website and thought it would be fun to try! Alright, I'm going to give you clues about some aspect of our subjects. Say, for example, the answer is a Schema in Logic, or the word Silva in Latin, I'll describe it and you try to guess the answer. (If you have a guess, post a comment below to see if it's right! If you can't guess, and need more clues also leave a comment and I'll try to help you)

Challenge B

It displays information in an organized way.

There are 117 different things displayed on this chart.

This chart displays both numbers and letters.

It can be helpful in some research.

This info is divided into nine categories.

It is in the subject Science.

Challenge A

It is a person.

This person was male.

He died on April 19, 1882.

He was about 5 feet tall.

He took interest in the Galapogos Islands.

He believed in natural selection.

Good Luck!

Summer Reading and Preparation

Here are some recommended books you could read to prepare for your upcoming school year! These were all recommended by Robert Bortins on the Classical Conversations website.

Recommendations for Challenge B- From the CC Website

The History of Science - it’s only a reference book for students, but if they could read it, even better.

The Hiding Place- because it is the longest book they'll read

Read Fallacy Detective- Link

Other Recommendations
Look over vocabulary for Latin and start making flash cards

Look over Introductory Logic book.

Watch the Tour Guide for Logic and Latin.
Start looking for good science fair project idea book.
Recommendations for Challenge A- From the CC Website

Paddle to the Sea, by Holling C. Holling: A toy Indian and his canoe travel from Lake Nipigon to the Atlantic Ocean.

Carry On, Mr. Bowditch, Jean Lee Latham: From indentured servant to famous navigator, this story follows the life of a self-educated young man and his remarkable contributions to maritime navigation in the early 1700s.

2000 Leagues Under the Sea , by Jules Verne: Sent to investigate mysterious encounters that are disrupting international shipping, Professor Aronnax, his servant Conseil, and disgruntled harpooner Ned Land are captured when their frigate is sunk during an encounter with the "monster." The submarine Nautilus and its eccentric Captain Nemo afford the professor and his companions endless fascination and danger as they're swept along on a yearlong undersea voyage. (free e-book available at http://www.manybooks.net/titles/vernejuletext942000010.html.)

More Than Meets the Eye , Richard Swenson, M.D. (for parents & students!) “Dr. Swenson examines the wonders of creation and explains how they reveal a majestic God whose mastery of detail is evident everywhere.”

Land Run

School's out! We finally finished this challenging year of working hard and doing our best. Challenge A was fun and I'm a little sad it's over, but I'm glad to have a break. We just finished closing ceremonies this weekend and we are looking forward to the summer! We have some fun events coming up on May 7, (if you want to look at the upcoming events page, there's some links on there.) Anyway, the Land Run is going to be a fun event to take the family to.

History About the Real Oklahoma Land Run-

Thousands Rushing to Claim Land
The Oklahoma Land Run (or land rush) was on April 22, 1889, and included a whole 2 million acres. 50,000 people, with several different careers and specialties, rushed here from different states to claim land of thier own, and to hopefully find opportunity for better life. Oklahoma was filled with people that day. Suprisingly, the population of people rose from 0 to 10,000 in one day. The goverment had planned this operation for weeks, and finally, the city of Guthrie was built! This was a very important day for Oklahoma. People have created memorials to remember this day. So now, we too reenact the Land Run to remember and learn about this significant day.
